What actually happens to your garden

The same driveway, photographed the whole way through. Most of this is the part you would never see — and it is the part that decides whether the drive is still flat in ten years.

    What we started with

    Tired lawn and a cracked concrete path gone green, running round the side of the house.

    Lines before spades

    The edge gets set out to a string line first. Get this wrong and every course after it is wrong.

    Digging out

    Down to a proper depth

    The old surface comes out and the ground goes down far enough for a sub-base that will still be flat with two cars on it.

    Sub-base in, sand screeded

    Compacted in layers, then a screeded sand bed. This is the part nobody photographs and the part that decides whether a drive lasts.

    Blocks going down

    Laid off the string, cuts kept to the edges, edge restraints set in concrete so nothing spreads under a turning car.

    Kiln-dried sand brushed into every joint, edges cut in, and the site left clean.
