Tree work, fencing and landscaping in Waterlooville

Chalk under the gardens, the Downs to the north, and whole new estates on the western edge.

Waterlooville grew up along the old London road behind Portsdown Hill, and with Cowplain, Purbrook, Widley, Horndean, Lovedean and Denmead around it, it is the biggest cluster of gardens between Portsmouth and the Downs. The ground is chalk, so it drains fast and the lawns go brown first in a dry summer, but the trees that like it, beech, yew and whitebeam, grow big and old here.

North of Horndean the land rises into the South Downs National Park at Clanfield, and the big trees in older gardens on that edge are the ones that need careful planned work rather than a saw on a windy day. West towards Denmead you are into the last pieces of the old Forest of Bere, oak country, with the same questions about protected trees we deal with across Hampshire.

Then there is the new side of town. The estates going up on the western edge, Berewood among them, arrive as blank turf rectangles: compacted subsoil, bare panel fences and nothing else. Turning one into a garden, with proper ground preparation, a patio and planting and a fence that will outlast the developer's, is a job we take on from the ground up.
